Maria Barber has always been creative and has tried many different crafts in the past. About 20 years ago she first discovered stained glass and fell in love with its magical qualities. Maria took courses in both the copper foil and lead techniques but it only remained an occasional hobby while her three daughters grew up.
In 2012 Maria left her career as an Inflight Nurse and decided to pursue her dream of making stained glass full time. Her youngest daughter Annie was studying Illustration and Animation at Kingston University and started to produce small pencil drawings as a design resource for her. Maria’s first creations were two pieces of Wall Art called ‘In the Clouds’ and ‘Cliff Top’. When she showed them to Annie, they both realised they had a unique concept which could only be limited by their collective imaginations.
Glass Art was born. Since then the mother and daughter collaboration has made it possible to create and make an unusual and charming range of unique designs. The collections feature animals, pictorial scenes and decorative pieces.
Maria works with a wide range of stained and iridescent glass and loves it’s truly unique beauty. While she really enjoys the creative process, her studio is a Health and Safety nightmare overrun with all the cutting and grinding of glass, copper foiling, soldering and finishing with wirework, wood and decorative buttons and beads!
Maria handcrafts every item from her home studio in Caterham, Surrey and now sells a popular range of Glass Wall Art and Gifts at Craft Fairs, Exhibitions and the Mine Art Gallery. Maria also has an Etsy shop and website and occasionally makes commissions and personalised items.
